Microbiotypes (2021–2022) is a series of hand-drawn ink works later digitised and reconfigured for circulation in the NFT sphere.

 

Conceived at a moment when the art world and popular culture were negotiating the promises and pitfalls of blockchain, the series embodies both an engagement with and a distance from that emergent ecosystem.

The hybrid creatures that populate the series synthesise the artist’s longstanding influences with figures drawn from the zeitgeist of the early 2020s. At once playful and uncanny, they suggest an imaginary taxonomy/microorganisms that carry traces of cultural memory, media saturation, and digital speculation within them.

​

Although uploaded as NFTs, the artist never fully embraced the mechanisms of that market, positioning the project instead as an experiment in medium and distribution.

 

As such, Microbiotypes can be read both as a document of a particular technological moment and as a continuation of drawing’s capacity to absorb, mutate, and re-emerge in new forms.
